(I am not a doctor, the following are ways I have coped with my pain. Before doing any of the following, consult with a medical provider.)

  1. Stretching. Yes, I'm sure you've heard this a million times, but that's for a reason; it helps. It may not completely relieve your pain, but it can offer temporary aid. With dystonia, our muscles get tight and contact; stretching offers a release in these tight ligaments.

  2. Consulting a doctor for possible medications. I have found that the medications that have been prescribed to me regarding my neck pain have helped me. Consulting your doctor about possible medical treatments, such as prescriptions, can help.

  3. Ice. During particularly bad days when my muscles contract, I like to use ice to help alleviate the tension.

  4. Physical Therapy. Therapy allows you to stretch your tight muscles. Oftentimes, the physical therapist will give you exercises to do throughout the day to help reduce pain.

  5. Taking care of your mental health. Over the years, I have found that stress makes my pain worse. My neck muscles already contract to begin with, and adding stress makes these muscles tighten even more. Mental health has a large impact on pain levels.

  6. Posture! Your muscles and back are already working overtime, don't put additional stress on them!
